solid gold or sterling silver

Every design here can be cast in four metals: sterling silver, 14K yellow gold, 14K rose gold or 18K yellow gold. All four are solid metal all the way through, not plated. You pick the metal when you order from Shapeways*.

what each metal is

Sterling silver
92.5% silver, 7.5% other metals (mostly copper). The 925 stamped on silver jewelry. cool white. Darkens a little over time, a polishing cloth brings it back.
14K yellow gold
58.3% gold, the rest other metals such as silver, copper and zinc. warm yellow. Hard wearing, the most common karat for everyday jewelry in the US.
14K rose gold
58.3% gold, with more copper in the mix. pink. The copper gives the color, and it doesn't wash off or wear away.
18K yellow gold
75% gold. deeper yellow. A little softer than 14K and about a fifth heavier for the same piece.

how heavy it is

Every pendant is a 1.2 mm plate with a lowercase height of 4.2 mm, so the weight depends on the name and the metal. These are the weights of real designs in classic script, worked out from their 3D files.

Pendant only, without the chain. 18K comes out heaviest because gold is denser than the metals it's mixed with.

the lettering changes the weight too

Every lettering is cast at the same 4.2 mm lowercase height, but some have fuller strokes than others. Over all 414 names on this site, retro takes 38% less metal than classic script. In gold that's real money, because the price follows the weight.

what it costs

Shapeways sets the price when you upload the file, and it mostly follows the weight and the gold price. For the names above, the quotes we got from them in September 2026 came to roughly:

solid, plated or vermeil?

Many name necklaces are gold plated: a thin layer of gold over brass or steel. They cost less, but the layer can wear through and show the metal underneath. Vermeil is a thicker gold layer over sterling silver, and it can wear too. A solid gold piece is gold all the way through, so there's nothing to wear off.

How much gold is that? Here is the pure gold in one Olivia pendant in classic script, solid, and with the thinnest gold layer that may be sold under each name in the US (FTC Jewelry Guides), over the same surface (530 mm²):

Olivia pendantpure gold in itwhy
18K solid gold1.9 g75% of the metal is gold
14K solid gold1.2 g58.3% of the metal is gold
gold vermeil26 mgat least 2.5 microns of gold over sterling silver
gold electroplate1.8 mgat least 0.175 microns of gold over any metal

So solid 14K holds about 47 times the gold of a vermeil piece and around 680 times the gold of an electroplated one. Those are minimums and a plated piece can carry more, but even then the gold is a skin far thinner than a hair, over a different metal.

Sterling silver is the affordable solid choice. If it has to be gold, 14K is the sturdier everyday metal and 18K is richer in color and heavier.
