how big an initial is

An initial is drawn at the same scale as a name (4.2 mm lowercase height), so it's as big as the first letter of their name would be, plus a ring on each side. Script capitals are wide and loopy, so most come out wider than they are tall.

how it hangs

A ring on each side. The letter sits upright between two jump rings, with the chain running through both, the way a name necklace hangs. It doesn't dangle from one loop at the top.
Level and on the outside. The rings sit at the same height, halfway up the capital, on the letter's outer edges, so it hangs straight.
Big swashes. A few capitals with long flourishes, like E, F, K and T in signature, have a ring sitting on the swash. Check the preview, or try that letter in another lettering.
Any chain up to 1.5 mm. The rings are fused on, and the chain isn't included.

weight and price

A capital in classic script weighs 0.9 g to 1.5 g in 14k gold, about half to most of what a short name like Lina weighs (1.7 g).

The price drops less than the weight. Shapeways sets it when you upload the file, and much of it doesn't depend on the gold. With the quotes we got from them in September 2026, a classic capital in 14k gold came to roughly $385 to $445, against about $475 for Lina.

lowercase, or two letters

Lowercase works too, but it comes out small: a classic "a" is 12 mm wide and 5.2 mm tall. Most people pick a capital.
Two initials like AJ are drawn up as a short name: 29 mm wide in classic script. Type them the way you'd write them, with or without dots.
